Abductions, torture cases in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania (2024–2025)
In July 2025, Kenyan activist Mwabili Mwagodi was abducted in Tanzania, while in May 2025, Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire were also kidnapped and tortured there.
Between 2024 and 2025, Kenya recorded more than 100 cases of abduction and forced disappearance, with several victims later found dead showing signs of torture. Human rights groups blamed security agencies for the abuses and the continued lack of accountability.
In Uganda, opposition figures and activists faced escalating repression.

In April 2024, NUP security chief Eddie Mutwe was abducted and tortured. The following January, four members of the Lubaga Social Justice Centre were detained, blindfolded, and beaten, while in April 2025, nine youth environmentalists protesting against the EACOP project were arrested.
Across the region, transnational repression also intensified. In November 2024, Ugandan opposition leaders Kizza Besigye and Haji Obeid Lutale were seized in Kenya and deported.
